Subaru To Participate in Nurburgring Enduro With Impreza STI 2008
Subaru have announced that they will be entering their own close-to-stock car in the 36th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race, which takes place at the Nurburgring later this month.
Subaru’s entrant will be a relatively standard GRB WRX STI, with a full roll cage, racing brakes, race suspension, stripped interior and modified instrumentation being the only major changes. The motor is still the familiar EJ20, which aside from a modified crankcase ventilation system and a deeper radiator core is effectively the same as the one that comes in all JDM STIs. The WRX will be entered in the SP6 class, which puts it against other production-based cars with an engine capacity between three and four litres.
Subaru hope that the race will produce some meaningful data on how they can improve the WRX STI’s performance, which hopefully means a harder-core variant may get released in the near future, although whether that know-how gets put into the rumoured Spec-C is anyone’s guess. Toshihiro Yoshida, Hideshi Matsuda, Naoki Hattori and Koji Matsuda will all drive the car over the 24-hour race, and all have a wealth of motorsport experience from Super GT, Indy 500 and Super Taikyu.
The Nurburgring 24-hour event starts on May 23 and ends May 25
Press-Release: Impreza WRX STI enters Nurburgring 24-Hour
Race
Fuji Heavy Industries(FHI) and its subsidiary company for undertaking all motorsport activities Subaru Tecnica International (STI) (1) are set to enter the 36th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race (the Nurburgring 24-Hour Race), held at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany in May 2008 with its Impreza WRX STI. The aim is for a class win.
The 36th ADAC Zurich 24 Hour Race features one of the longest lap of endurance
event, a staggering 25.378km in total. Every year, over 200 machines participate - including a handful of the most famous European cars.
For FHI which has the concept of development as "More safety, more fun", participation to this event is best opportunity for the accumulation of essential technical know-how. To that end, the development of road cars makes use of this principle, and was a deciding factor in its participation in this event.
The machine entered is based on the Impreza WRX STI, with FHI’s technical team managing development. With minimal modifications including weight reduction and safety measures, the machine is as close to a production car as possible. With this, they will enter the SP6 class, full of strong cars with engines from 3.0 to 3.5 litres in capacity. In preparation for competition in this event, the Subaru NBR (3) Challenge team was established, consisting of STI and Prova (2) staff, who together possess an abundant knowledge of management in Super Taikyu race operations. As the team director, Hideharu Tatsumi from STI’s chassis experiment division who was heading up vehicle development at time in Fuji Heavy Industries will lead the team, while a vastly experienced crew of four Japanese drivers will take the wheel in the race.
Other than the Grand Prix Course, the Nurburgring Circuit has the Nordschleife, also known as the "Old Course." The Old Course, totaling 20.832km in length, with over 160 corners and an over 300m difference in overall elevation, is known as the most gruelling racetrack in the world. FHI has been using this old course as a test track for machine development of the Impreza since the early 1990s. They have advanced their production cars greatly by overcoming the issues they faced here.In 2005, the Prova Team made result with 2nd in class A6 (14th overall) with Impreza WRX STI in that time.
