Autoerwerb

deutsch:
Ich werde einen Vermächtnislastwagen kaufen. Sind 2000 viel besser als 1998? Ich hörte dort war Maschine Probleme mit 1998. Ist sie wert das Extrageld, zum 2000 zu kaufen? Danke.

English:

I am going to purchase a legacy wagon. Are the 2000 much better than the 1998? I heard there were engine problems with the 1998. Is it worth the extra money to buy the 2000?

Thanks.

@bdgood
Hi, welcome to our forum. I dared to slightly modify the German translation of your text since it sounded - sorry - funny if not just ridiculous in some parts. Apparently you got it from an automatic translater. Am I right?

deutsch [modified by 'me']:
Ich werde einen Legacy Kombi kaufen. Sind die Jg. 2000 viel besser als die 1998? Ich hörte, die 1998er hatten Probleme mit dem Motor. Ist der 2000er den Mehrpreis wert? Danke.

patGT

P.S. "Vermächtnislastwagen", ich glaub ich krieg nen Lachkrampf *prust*....

Could you translate your P.S. for me? I can't get it from the translater.
Thanks.

Hi,

the funny part: the P.S. is about the translation of "Legacy Wagon" ... it was translated something that sounds like "inherited lorry".

the technical issues: of course, the Legacy 3 (1999 ... 2003) is improved related to the Legacy 2 (1994 ... 1999). But it wasn't a big step. The major changes are

- more horse power while the fuel consumption stayed constant
- longer wheelbase
- better rear axle (at least, more space in the trunk)
- automatic air condition (Legacy 2 had a manual air condition)

Maybe there are some more points I don't know.

I own a Legacy 2 (2 litre Wagon) and I'm very confident. The only thing you should know that the Legacy 2 with 2.5 litre engine had some problems with the engine (cylinder head gasket etc) - but still more reliable than most other cars!!! I recommend to buy the 2 litre version: cheaper, reliable and fast enough anyway.
If you want more performance, buy the Legacy 3 with 2.5 litre (156PS) or the Outback H6 (six cylinder, over 200 PS).

cheers,
Gerd

So tell me if I understand correctly...

The 2nd gen had a 2 liter engine and was more reliable than the 3rd gen which had a 2.5 liter engine.

The second gen was 1994-1999 or 1994-1998?
Third gen was 2000-2003 or 1999-2003?

You are recommending the second generation for reliability which would be 1994-1998 or 1999 right?

Thanks.

Hi,

sorry, my information wasn't complete. A little Table:

'94-'96: Legacy 2 with 2.0 (115PS) or 2.2 (128PS)
'97-'98: Legacy 2 with 2.0 (115PS) or 2.5 (150PS)
'99-'03: Legacy 3 with 2.0 (125PS) or 2.5 (156PS)
---> the 2.5 with 150PS (Years '97 to '98) is a bit problematic.

There is another Model, called Outback. It is a kind of "Off-Road Legacy" with more ground clearance (200mm instead of 155mm):

'97-'98: Legacy 2 Outback with 2.5 (150PS) (same problem with the engine)
'99-'03: Legacy 3 Outback with 2.5 (156PS)
'00-'03: Legacy 3 Outback with 3.0 (209PS, six cylinders)

To cut a long story short: when you buy a Legacy 2 (or Legacy 2 Outback) with 2.5 litres displacement, you should take care of the engine.

cheers,
Gerd

@Brad
Fine, I see in the meantime you got some answers to your question!

Sorry for my joking, by the way. Mainly, the word in question was "Vermächtnislastwagen" which is something like "truck of last will" or "legacy truck" (with 'legacy' not as the name but the notion).

Hopefully, you get a Legacy *ggg* soon and have lots of fun with it.

patGT

Hello Brad.

From what I gathered here: The 2.5 has sometimes had problems with gaskets in the first two years it was made. The automatic version has had trouble with transmission.

Overall, the car was still rated as better than most of the others you see on the street - however, if you're one of the very few unlucky owners, you'll have to cash out a nice chunk. Maybe best if you avoid the two problematic years and enjoy the ride ever after.

I bought a 2.2 station on December 31 last year and have been happy since. I had to replace a few things and a few are still pending, but I think it's nothing unusual for a car with over 150,000 klicks.

Let us know. And don't use the Internet automatic translators - better leave it in English only. On the second thought, it did provide a laugh :)

Boris,
Belgrade

Thanks very much everyone...

Clicks are kilometers right? If so, that's 93,000 miles to me.

So If I get a 2.5, and it has around that kind of mileage, should I replace the head gasket before it blows? What else do you recommend I would do to "take care of the engine"? Timing belt, other seals?

Thanks. Brad

By the way I enjoyed the joking...I am mostly German so my whole family appreciates words and word play, etc...I think that's a German things maybe.
