differences between US and DE version of WRX

Anyone know the differences between the US spec WRX and one sold in Germany
More importantly what will the TUV need changed if one tries to bring over
a WRX from the USA

Fuses/Safety ??
Lights/Reflectors ??

I know that the US version has three catalysts and so should pass emissions
Anything else that I should watch out for?

we had the topic some time ago, as some of us are interested in the new sti 2.5 litre engine...

what exactly needs to be done for american cars to meet european (and swiss ) regulations is not evident yet.

here an example of a 2.5 US STi imported some weeks ago:

31000,- $ car
1600,- $ Bremerhaven (handling, harbor tax and delivery)
600,- EUR delivery (TÜV and transport to Austria)

30000,- EUR incl. 10% EU customs (1,205,- EUR = 1 US $)

3300,- EUR TÜV including "Abgas-und Laermeinzelgutachten" (exhaust and noise tests)
2000,- EUR dealer profit
35300,- EUR total cost without tax

so i think your car only needs exhaust and noise test. no changes to fuses / lights, no other tech mods to be done. just drive and enjoy

as you are bringing a car in from another country, the Tüv is pretty easy in this respect,. As you can then get a gutachten (certificate which states all changed parts etc as "standard") in one go.

Not sure about the differences between the two models, but the STI versions are different.

If you are importing it, there are two ways to go here - one, if you are with the us forces, then they can bring it in for you - no charge, plus you are exempt from tüv and a few other things - plus you can have a different numberplate to the rest of us.. If you are bringing it in privately, make sure you "own" the car longer than 6 months, then it is regarded as a "used car" and is exempt from import taxes.. There is a lot mor to it, but if you need more info etc, then I can put you in touch with a few people who can help you...

PS: are you in germany already? And if so, where-abouts??

The car is a 2002 WRX Wagon 5 Speed Rally Blue in stock condition except for a couple of Subaru Dealer installed parts and a trailer hitch

I am thinking of bringing it with me to Germany around September

I will be importing it privately and have to pay the shipping and testing costs out of my pocket $$$$.

I heard from a friend who imported a SLK from Germany to the US that it cost him $1000 one way to ship if he drove it himself from the ports on both sides

then I need to figure out the costs involved with the TUV.
If the emissions and sound tests cost EUR 3300 then maybe it does not make sense

Is there anything on the TUV website that gives general guidelines for import cars

Thanks

Here's a little bit of extra info on exporting/importing a car:

http://www.importexporthelp.com/car-exporting.htm

http://www.de.tuv.com/germany/de/produkte/mobilitaet_und_verkehr/fahrzeugpruefung_stationaer/rund_ums_fahrzeug/import.html

You also might want to check some local european car dealerships for used wrx's. At the very least, the cars came with better brakes than the US models as well as the option of the fixed headrest seats. All came with 17" wheels as well. The price of buying in europe is pretty expensive compared to the US but if you include all the cost of shipping and import, you might be better off.
