Hallo!
Happy Birthday Subaru Impreza!

Lappy on the 10th anniversary of the Impreza
As one of the father figures of the Impreza Rally car, how do you feel on its tenth birthday?
When we started work on the first Impreza, we were still a very small, new team. We hadn't won anything and were up against some tough competition.
With that in mind, when I look back now at what's been achieved ten years later, that the Subaru has become a classic and one of the cars that most represents rally - almost an icon, it's very exciting.
If we knew then what we were going to achieve, then we'd have been very proud. With the Impreza we've taken five World Rally Championship titles and 35 wins at WRC level, which is some achievement.
The car's history has spanned an era which has seen the biggest growth and change to the Championship. When we started with the Impreza we were still roaring round the countryside with unrestricted servicing, helicopter services in the middle of fields and up to two weeks of practice before an event.
Today, it's very different. We've got just one Service Park, WRC cars, restricted services, six manufacturers, TV coverage, while the drivers' salaries have increased five fold. If only the same applied to the rest of the team personnel!
What do you think has been the key to its success and long life?
The advantage of the Impreza is that the Impreza road car is a very good place to start building a rally car from. The engine is in the right place, the layout is good and the basic road car has all the attributes of a rally car.
In the case of Subaru, the link between the two cars has remained very, very strong, we still have the same basic suspension layout, the same engine and transmission layout and same basic dimensions - it can be traced back all the way through the last ten years.
What are the biggest differences between the WRC 2003 and the 1993 model?
We're currently on the ninth evolution of the Impreza rally car. WRC regulations heralded the biggest changes and enabled us to add aerodynamic devices and new bumpers that gave the car biggest visual change and aggressive look that we're used to today.
Under the skin though it's been more a story of continual evolution rather than one revolution. But even taking into account the technology we've incorporated into the bodyshell, engine, gearbox and suspension, it's possible to trace back all the major components to those on the original Subaru.
