quote:
On Oct. 7, Honda Motor Co. introduced the first fully remodeled Legend luxury car in eight years, featuring a 300-horsepower engine and "super-handling all-wheel drive" (SH-AWD) system.
The sedan "performs like a sports car," said Honda President Takeo Fukui, due to low weight technologies developed by the automaker jointly with parts and materials suppliers. The SH-AWD system distributes optimum power among all four wheels rather than between two pairs as in conventional 4WD vehicles, to significantly improve stability.
The car's 3.5-liter V6 engine offers maximum output of 300hp, the first motor to do so since automakers made a voluntary agreement in 1990 to limit maximum engine output for the Japanese market to 280hp in response to increasing traffic fatalities. Improved performance since then has made the restriction unnecessary.
Increased weight has been a problem for recent cars, which have added new safety and other devices. Improved chassis parts and engine performance cannot improve overall performance if the gross weight of the vehicle is growing.
The new Legend weighs 1,760 kilograms, 90kg more than the previous version. But that increase would have been 241kg if conventional materials and technologies had been used. Trimming weight was a top priority for the designers, and it was accomplished mainly by using new materials provided by metal suppliers.
Half the car's frame is made of light, high-strength steel sheet, while the drive shaft is carbon fiber-enhanced plastic. Aluminum alloy sheet developed by Honda jointly with Nippon Steel Corp. and Furukawa-Sky Aluminum Corp. has made the "trunk lid frame 47% lighter and the subframe 38% lighter" than previous steel versions, according to Nippon Steel.
