Help me from being subyless

Hey my German is not that good, so I hope you can forgive me for writing in English. I will be moving in April from the US to Berlin for work. My contract is 3 yrs long, so I will be staying for a while. I am an owner of a USDM 07 STi. I love this car and I would be really sad to have to sell. The car is lightly modded (stage II with custom opensource tune) and has some suspension mods. I am debating shipping the car to Germany and I need help deciding whether it is worth it.

I am aware that I need to make some changes to meet European specs. I was quoted headlights and rear fog light. Does anyone now for sure what else needs to be converted? Or could recommend a subaru dealership or mechanic that I can contact?

I have an aftermarket catted downpipe and relatively loud exhaust would I have problems passing inspection?

Roughly how much does it cost to insure an STi? I am 28 with a clean record. I am looking for an approximate figure.

Approximately how much is registration?

I am just trying to figure out if it makes financial sense to bring STi with me.

Danke shon

Hello,

first, nice car. If the exhaust is realy loud, it's not good.

Then the lights needs a rear fog light and rear flashlights should be yellow in Germany. Better to change the whole rearl lights. The headlights must be changed too. Important. Headlights needs range adjustment. Maybe, you need switch and wires too. Yellow daylights, using front flashlights, are forbidden too. The Speedometer should be able, to show you km/h. Dual Speedo with miles and km/h allowed. As far as i know. Then you need the EU Datasheet for your Car. Google says TÜV Augsburg should be your friend. The US title can help you, make things easier, maybe.

I believe there is a lot more. To be continued..

best wishes Mike,

P.S.: Sorry for my crazy english. :D

Welcome here! Nice subby :D

In Heidelberg is a big US military base, a lot of US cars drive there with US registration - it seems possible for temporary purposes.
Here is a discussion on the topic: http://www.toytowngermany.com/lofi/index.php/t168548.html

I don´t think it it is worth to convert your car to EU specs if it is only for three years - you have to convert it to US specs when you return. And the shipping comes on top... But this depends on your plans, your contract and how you like Germany :) (by the way: approx. 85% of Berlin is limited to 50km/h).
Registration is separated in tax and insurance: tax will be around 300€ to 400€, insurance around 600€ and 1500€.
Loud Exhaust: "Einzelabnahme" at "TÜV" is what you are looking for, but that´s a hard but possible challenge...

Thanks guys you are awesome!

Does anybody recommend a dealership that I contact regarding the modifications to convert to euro spec?
So would it be safe to say that operating costs (insurance and registration) would not be more than 2000 euro?
Can anyone recommend an insurance company to get a quote from?
So the speed limit around Berlin is only 50 kph? Maybe I should sell the suby and get a Fiat punto.
