Hias, danke für deine Antwort!

So, how does it work, if the car I'm looking at is not in my city? Do I need to have the seller send me a copy of the paperwork so I can have some kind of temporary plate made so I can drive it home? Rote nummernschlld?

I assume I have to get my German driving license before I can even get car insurance, correct?

You need the original ones!

You have 5?! Possibilitis:
Buy the car, take the Paperwork with you and let the car at his previous owner. Register it, drive back with your new plates and than drive home with your Plates on your new Car.
Buy the car, take it on a trailer home
Buy the car, drive with the old Plates home, de-register it for the previous owner and register it for you!
Buy the car, and drive home with a "5 Tages Kennzeichen" or borrow "Rote Kennzeichen" from a Dealer (in germany only Dealers get this Plates)
