STI Overheating

I have a 2006 STI 2.5 litre, I take it to the race track, not a real race but club sprints against time, which is one warm up lap three timed laps and one cool down lap. The engine is stock standard.
The problem I have is that after I come back from the track the overflow bottle is over flowing and coolant is all over the engine that is on a 21º C day. I have been told by Subaru STI that this is normal and I should not worry about it. Now on a 31º C day the temperature rises on the temperature gauge into the middle of the third section of the gauge and much more coolant is lost, after the engine cooled down the overflow bottle is empty. I have been told this is normal, but they could fix it by fitting a STI radiator cap at a cost of $60.
I just can’t believe that Subaru would have designed and STI engine like that. The question I have to my German Fiends is when you drive your STI’s at 200km/h on the Autobahn do you have the same problem? On the race track I get just to 200Km/h before I have to brake for the next corner.

Hello Albert!

Yes, in Germany some STi drivers have these problems after a quick Autobahn ride. There seems to be a problem with the cylinder-head gasket that is not really top-quality :(. Some of them needed to change it after only 15.000 km ;(.

Thank you Frank, will bring this up with the service department on the 12th of November when it is booked in to get the rear differential changed and they going to investigate the overheating, they going to look at the radiator and thermostat. Not going to do much if the head gasket is the problem.

You're sure about this?
I mean with a MY06 you're still in manufacturers-guarantee!!!
When there some problems with the heads, they must fix these!

I was thinking the subaru-guarantee is still closely the same around the world.....

Yes Marcel, the car is under warranty. My argument is that I have purchased an STI then how come it doesn’t come with STI radiator caps. Will see next week what is going to happen. On the weekend in city traffic I could smell hot coolant and sure thing once arrived at my destination the overflow container was overflowing and that on a 15º day.

Hi Albert,

That c'ant be a good sing when you smelling hot coolant, when you drove only in citytraffic!
I thinking only with change to a STi 1.3 bar radiator cap, your problem don't will be fixed!!!!

The problems is the shortblock from the EJ25, it was a EJ20 but overbored,!
Also the headgasket will be a low cost item, so this is the mean problem on these kind of engine...

100%---it will be the cylinder head gasket ;(.My STi had the same problems!!!

Original radiator caps on the STI are not the pink STIs.
