"Honda is to showcase its new all-wheel drive system at the New York Motor Show next week. The system, called SH-AWD (Super Handling All-Wheel-Drive) is fitted to a prototype of the next-generation Acura RL, and it combines front-rear torque distribution with independently regulated torque distribution to the left and right wheels. Driver input is monitored, and at the rear differential, the torque ratios are continuously assessed and electro-magnetically adjusted. This is said to enhance cornering and handling, as well as provide optimum traction. The rear differential also incorporates a built-in acceleration device, which speeds up the rotation of wheels on the outside edge when cornering, to even up their rotation with that of the wheels on the inner curve. SH-AWD will appear in the Acura RL this autumn, and in the new Japanese-market Legacy, but it is likely to be fitted in European models shortly as well."
