American Subaru Enthusiast moving to Munich - Can I import my heavily modified USDM WRX?

Hello all,

I apologize but I don't know any German yet. I am moving to Munich in December and I would like to bring my car. I am concerned about passing a TUV test and I'm curious if anybody on this forum can offer advice.

My car is a USDM 2003 Subaru Impreza WRX Sport Wagon. It is heavily modified and my primary concerns are the external wastegate, 800cc injectors, and the 3" catless exhaust.


Is there any chance I can get the car to be EU/German compliant?


I appreciate any help you can give.

That's not what I want to hear!! I get it through emissions in the US by bolting on the stock exhaust from the turbo back. Once I pass the test I put the good stuff back on!!
Would this work in Germany? The external gate is not an easy change, is it possible to pass with an external gate at all?

Sorry .... no way.... Some People have 3 inch turbobacks catless here in germany, but they have Connections to the TÜV or they change the Exhaust to a catted system.... but with 800 injektors even with Cattet Downpipe it would be hard to pass the test.

EWG is also not possible... or use a big Bold On Turbo... may be Blouch 3.0xtr

AN Yes it would work, when you change the items to pass the emission test.

Some people do it also in germany to get there tuned STi passed trough the TÜV test.

I was afraid of that. I've had bad luck with internally gated large turbos. So is it safe to say that external wastegates are not a possibility in Germany at all?

Well, there are companies which are specialized on imports. Those guys pass Nissan Skylines, EVOs and Silvia, Imprezas and so on through the TÜV process. So it might be the best for you to let one of those companies do the TUV test.

I have some connections to a couple of import companies which are selling cars from US and Japan.

Offtopic - Lesen auf eigene Gefahr
EWG ist nicht zwingend, sonst hätten wir ja auch keine Nissan Skyline, Silvia oder andere Kisten auf der Straße :) Der R34 GTR aus meiner Nachbarschaft hat ja auch sein normales Kennzeichen und fährt im Alltag herum und das mit allen Eintragungen.

Es wird halt ine Vollabnahme gemacht und das Abgasgutachten wird teuer. Jedoch kann man es auch gut hinkriegen wenn ein Modell auf dem deutschen Markt war, da diese als Vergleichsfahrzeug herangezogen werden. So machen es zumindest die JDM Importeure.

Resonic say... To choose a German Import Dealer would be the best way to get TÜV test passed. They have experience with modified Japanes Import Cars. So there is the possibility, that you dont have to change anything on your car.

I think this would be the best way .

Those guys usually speak english, so it should work :)

Important things: a) Lights b) Exhaust and emissions.

a) Swap your headlights and rear lights with european market 2nd hand lights for your car. Problem solved.
Does your car have side markers? If it has side marker lights, then those lights must be disabled for the german streets, while sidemarkers are not allowed around here (just kick out the sidemarkers lightbulb).
b) Put your cat back into the car or swap the whole exhaust for a european 2nd hand stock exhaust for the emissions test. Then it shouldnt be very hard to pass any tests.

Sorry......... What is EEC?

My car does not have side markers so no problem there. Do you have contact info for any of these shops?

Silver STi BBS's and Tein coilovers. 365 AWHP and an STi six speed with fully functional DCCD. It's a fun car!

That was a question I had, too. You are writing that your car is heavily modified. Almost every aftermarked part needs a special certification from the manufacturer that this part corrosponds with the european rules of vehicle safety. Most of these parts have to be checked after mounting from the TUV - and whithout these certifications you're in big trouble.

Tein Coilovers can be tuved while there are already german Tein Dealers and i have some friends with tuved Tein suspension in their cars :)
